What is Chamois Cream?
A long time ago, on a continent far, far away… Cyclists depended upon Chamois Leather for protection in the saddle. The suppleness of the chamois greatly depended on it’s care and conditioning. Chamois Cream was traditionally used for this purpose. Now that we’re all (hopefully) using synthetic materials for our bits, it’s necessary to reduce friction between fabric and sensitive skin. A bonus benefit to chamois cream is anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Keeping things well oiled and clean is important for nearly any level of weekly riding or just for longer days in the saddle.
How do I apply Chamois Cream?
Everyone has their own methods but generally speaking, applying it to the skin after kitting up works just fine. In some instances, it helps to apply it to the chamois as well to provide a little saturation of the material and extra help in the “reduction of friction” department. Anywhere from a quarter-sized dab to a larger “dollop” is suitable. Thankfully, we have our Brevet size jar for longer days and tours that you can bring with you on the ride.
Do I really need Chamois Cream?
Nope! But you don’t really need clipless pedals either. It’s sometimes one of those things that once you try it, you may not go back. Riders tend to lean towards traditions of cycling after a while and creams are one of them (just make sure you don’t take any from anyone named Michele Ferrari!). If you’re increasing your mileage for the first time, you should consider using Chamois Cream to prevent any saddle sores. If you’ve been having trouble with discomfort after increasing your riding, this will get you back to feeling good again!
